  • Final fitting! My sad broken down feet are beyond thankful for the wonders of bespoke British craftsmanship.

Though I think the cobbler was actually German, which just makes the whole thing more fairy-tale-ish.

  • Lurking around Bloomsbury before a meeting with my literary agent.

  • One of the trickier bits of the restoration of this house: replacing missing shutters with exact replicas.

The new shutters were made by an artisan, in Brooklyn, using materials and methods as close to original as possible.

Even the guy who made them thought I was a wee bit OCD about the whole thing… and he drives a vintage motorcycle with sidecar.

  • Field trip to visit The Stove Lady.

My house had a big red Chambers stove when I moved in, but it definitely needed some work. Carlita and her crew coaxed the appliance back to life and have been looking after it ever since. She even found a complete set of accessory parts for the built-in slow cooker!

If you are trying to find or refurbish a vintage stove, Carlita is the person to call.
